Participants are introduced to the need for sustainable and disaster-resilient construction practices in Leh, Ladakh.

15 Oct 2026 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM Leh, Ladakh

Building in ecologically sensitive regions such as Leh, Ladakh, requires architectural approaches that respond to challenging climatic conditions, disaster risks and local resource constraints. Sustainable and circular building solutions can strengthen regional infrastructure while supporting communities over the long term.

Under the Local Institutions and SDG Action (LI & SDG) programme, Development Alternatives (DA) organised a workshop on sustainable and disaster-resilient construction practices in Leh on 15 October 2026, as part of the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) project. The workshop brought together 18 local contractors and homestay owners to explore practical pathways for upgrading the local built environment.

Following an introduction to the project and its objectives by DA, two interactive technical sessions were held in collaboration with the Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG), with technical inputs from Intekhab Alam of Emara Architects. The sessions focused on disaster-resilient building technologies and circular construction practices suitable for homestays.

Participants discussed construction-related challenges in Leh and explored opportunities to incorporate sustainable materials, resource efficiency and resilience-oriented techniques into local building practices. The discussions highlighted the need to adapt engineering solutions to Ladakh’s ecological conditions and traditional building practices.

The workshop brought technical experts, local contractors and homestay owners together to discuss construction practices suited to the region. Equipping local builders and homestay owners with context-sensitive, circular solutions ensures that sustainable habitat practices are embedded directly within community livelihoods across the Indian Himalayan Region.
