Participants gather for knowledge exchange and collaborative learning at Jal Chaupal 2026.

29 Sep 2026 to 01 Oct 2026 NA Mumbai, India

What does it take to turn waterbody rejuvenation into lasting water security? At Jal Chaupal 2026, convened by the A.T.E. Chandra Foundation (ATECF) from 29 September to 1 October, practitioners, government representatives, donors and implementing organisations came together to share field experiences, discuss implementation approaches and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Development Alternatives (DA) participated as a technical and knowledge partner, leading two sessions informed by its experience in ecosystem restoration, natural resource management and community-centred development. On 29 September, DA led an implementation playbook session on effective waterbody rejuvenation, focusing on site assessment, excavation and soil considerations, bunding, inlet and outlet management, and long-term maintenance. The discussion showed why sound processes matter as much as the physical restoration work.

On 1 October, DA led a second session on peri-urban waterbodies, examining challenges related to wastewater, sewage, solid waste, pollution and changing land use. The discussion explored treatment options, intervention choices and cost considerations, while emphasising the connections between waterbodies, catchments, settlements and local institutions.

The Chaupal also gave DA an opportunity to learn from peers and engage with philanthropic and government stakeholders. The platform encouraged practical exchange across organisations and perspectives, including conversations about potential partnerships. For everyone involved, it reinforced a shared priority: translating collective knowledge into stronger implementation practices and collaborative action for sustainable water security.

Participants engage in interactive discussions, exchanging experiences and practical insights on sustainable water management.
