Under the Nirmal Haridwar Project, Development Alternatives (DA), supported by TATA TRUSTS under the Community Resource Management (CRM) programme, conducted an intensive series of Bridging Information Gap (BIG) sessions across Haridwar. Spanning seven educational institutions including schools, academies, and Sanskrit Mahavidyalayas, the initiative successfully engaged 658 students through eight interactive learning workshops focused on responsible solid waste management and source segregation.

Moving away from conventional lecture models, each session engaged students through activity-based learning. Participants formed collaborative teams to map out distinct waste categories on analytical chart sheets, followed by competitive environmental quizzes and a hands-on sorting exercise where students correctly deposited household items into colour-coded collection bins.

Further, pre-and post-session assessments documented the effectiveness of this experiential pedagogical model, recording an increase of at least 75% in student comprehension scores. Each workshop culminated in a collective cleanliness pledge, with students committing to eliminate littering and champion segregation at home and in public spaces.

By transforming students into active environmental ambassadors, the initiative highlights Development Alternatives’ broader focus on cultivating intergenerational behavioural change. Integrating grassroots education with practical civic responsibility bridges the gap between infrastructure delivery and community action, ensuring that young citizens become foundational drivers of enduring circular and decentralised urban sanitation systems.
