The renovated 65-metre check dam in Mathurapura
In a significant step towards bolstering rural water security, Development Alternatives, under the Resource Access and Equity programme, successfully completed the renovation of a vital 65-metre Check Dam in Mathurapura, Niwari, Madhya Pradesh. This initiative addresses the critical need for sustainable water management in the region.
Originally constructed decades ago, the 30-year-old structure had fallen into disrepair, reducing its effectiveness. The comprehensive renovation has now restored its full functionality, giving it an impressive water impounding capacity of approximately 1.2 crore litres. This restored capacity is a lifeline for the local agrarian community, providing critical irrigation support to 130 hectares of agricultural land. Of this, 60 hectares will benefit directly from the assured water supply, while an additional 70 hectares will receive indirect irrigation support.
The positive impact of the project extends beyond surface irrigation. By capturing and storing monsoon runoff, the check dam facilitates significant groundwater recharge. This has already strengthened the water availability of 35 dug wells in the vicinity, ensuring that farmers have access to water even during the dry spells. The intervention directly benefits a community of 86 farmers, empowering them to pursue more reliable and diversified agricultural practices.
By mitigating the risks of water scarcity, the renovated Check Dam in Mathurapura is not just an infrastructure project; it is a cornerstone for sustainable livelihoods. It reduces the dependence on erratic rainfall and promotes agricultural resilience, contributing to the long-term economic and environmental well-being of the village. This achievement underscores DA’s commitment to community-led development and the restoration of traditional water bodies for a secure future.
