The Indian Micro Enterprises Development Foundation (IMEDF) hosted a webinar on 16 March 2026 titled Women at the Helm: Scalable, Inclusive, Investment-Ready Models, bringing together practitioners and experts to explore how women-led enterprises are shaping rural economies.
The session focused on cluster-based enterprise models under the SFURTI scheme, with examples from Nagaland, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. A standout was the Udyam Utthan Samiti cluster, where tribal women artisans are leading a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO). With over 500 women involved, the initiative is strengthening livelihoods through local value addition, enterprise development, and community ownership, while also reducing distress migration.
Another example came from the Mat Craft cluster in Paschim Medinipur, which demonstrated how traditional skills can be adapted into climate-smart livelihoods. Through targeted training, improved infrastructure, and stronger market linkages, women artisans have transitioned from low-income work to more stable and sustainable earnings, while promoting eco-friendly production practices.
Beyond the models, personal accounts from women artisans highlighted a shift in financial independence, confidence, and leadership within their communities.
The discussion underscored a clear takeaway: with the right mix of capacity building, institutional support, and market access, women-led clusters can evolve into scalable, investment-ready enterprises. More importantly, they serve as powerful drivers of inclusive rural development, creating both economic opportunity and lasting social impact.
