Job description

    About Development Alternatives Group

Development Alternatives (DA) is a premier social enterprise pioneering sustainable development solutions since 1982. Headquartered in New Delhi, the mission of the Development Alternatives Group is to promote inclusive, equitable, and resilient national development by creating sustainable livelihoods at scale. Through integrated clean technology solutions, micro-enterprise development, and collaborative institutional ecosystems, DA bridges practice and policy, working with partners to catalyse large-scale action towards poverty eradication and environmental regeneration.

DA’s work addresses the three interconnected crises of our time, Jobs, Resources, and Climate through impact across three core areas, Livelihood Security & Inclusive Entrepreneurship, Resource Efficiency & Circular Economy and Climate Change & Ecosystem Restoration.

These goals are advanced through nine interlinked programmes: Women’s Economic Empowerment, Inclusive Entrepreneurship Ecosystems, Greening of Industry, Sustainable Urban Ecosystems, Natural Ecosystem Restoration, Resource Access and Equity, Clean Technology Enterprises, Community Resource Management, and Local Institutions & SDG Action.

With a multidisciplinary team of over 120 professionals committed to innovation and impact, DA has consistently demonstrated the ability to identify critical development challenges and design effective, scalable solutions.

Over the past four decades, Development Alternatives has positively impacted the lives of more than 20 million people, building pathways for sustainable and inclusive growth.

    Context and Role

The Climate Change & GIS team at Development Alternatives works on geospatial analysis and decision-support tools to support low-carbon industrial development and sustainable construction. We use geospatial intelligence to assess the feasibility of using Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) and strengthen pathways for decarbonising India’s cement and construction sectors.

The GIS Intern will support a fast-paced assessment of kaolin clay supply feasibility for cement plants across India. The role will involve sourcing and validating secondary geological and industrial datasets, building structured spatial databases, and conducting GIS-based network and suitability analyses to help identify feasible links between kaolin clay deposits and cement plants. The intern will be expected to work independently, respond quickly to analytical requirements, and deliver accurate outputs within tight timelines.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

The GIS Intern would be expected to:

    • Identify, source, compile, georeference, and validate secondary datasets on kaolin clay deposits, cement plants, transport networks, and other relevant parameters from credible government and institutional sources.
    • Build and maintain structured, well-documented GIS databases, including metadata, source references, coordinate systems, and data-quality checks.
    • Conduct GIS-based network analysis to assess road connectivity, distances, potential supply routes, and accessibility between kaolin clay deposits and cement plants.
    • Undertake suitability analysis and support Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to rank potential supply locations and assess supply-side feasibility.
    • Use ArcGIS Pro and/or QGIS, and relevant data-processing tools, to prepare spatial outputs, maps, tables, and concise analytical summaries.
    • Deliver accurate, well-documented outputs at a fast pace; communicate data gaps, assumptions, and methodological limitations promptly and work collaboratively with the project team.

    Qualification, Experience and technical skills:

    • Qualification: Master’s degree (completed or pursuing) in Geoinformatics (mandatory)
    • Hands-on experience with ArcGIS Pro and/or QGIS, including spatial data management, geoprocessing, and map preparation.
    • Ability to source, compile, clean, and validate secondary datasets; experience with geological or mineral-resource data is an advantage.
    • Working knowledge of network analysis, suitability analysis, and MCDA is desirable. Strong data-management skills and familiarity with Python or other data-processing tools are an advantage.
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret spatial data.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in English and the ability to work independently.
    • Commitment to producing accurate, high-quality outputs and maintaining clear documentation of data sources and assumptions.
    • Well organised and adaptable, with the ability to manage competing tasks and deliver under pressure with fast turnaround times.

    How to Apply?
