Radio Bundelkhand - Communicating Reuse, Recycle, Reduce

Solid waste management is a critical issue in the modern world, and Madhya Pradesh, located in the heart of India, is no exception. With a population of over 75 million, the state faces significant challenges in effectively managing its solid waste. However, Madhya Pradesh has recognised the importance of sustainable waste management practices and has taken several commendable initiatives to address this pressing concern. This article highlights the efforts made by Radio Bundelkhand in building a cleaner environment in the state.

Harbhajan, a 35 years old farmer encourages his family of four and others to adopt simple and effective waste management practices in his village. Earlier the income generated from farming was insufficient in meeting the expenses of his big family. He wanted to do more with farming so that his children's education and household expenses could be taken care of properly. Harbhajan is a devoted listener of Radio Bundelkand and he follows the programmes aired on the radio diligently. One day while listening to Shubh Kal, Radio Bundelkhand’s flagship programme, he heard RJ Manish talking about carrying a cloth bag to the market instead of polythene bags. Since then, Harbhajan made up his mind to do the same and told his wife and his daughters to carry a cloth bag every time they go to the market. Apart from this, his daughter, who also listens to infotainment on Radio Bundelkhand, learnt about making organic manure and mulching that can be used for farming. Harbhajan immediately agreed to adopt this practice and is very proud that it was his daughter who initiated the idea after listening to Radio Bundelkhand. The information on making indigenous manure was also aired on the Shubh Kal programme. Now Harbhajan makes indigenous manure at home and saves money. His family carries a cloth bag every time they go to the market. His daughters are proud of the fact that they do not harm the environment. Harbhajan is thankful to Radio Bundelkhand, it is because of the programmes are filled with useful information which is relevant for the communities.

Listening to these programmes helps the farming communities to avoid making mistakes and become cautious of saving the environment. Small behaviour changes and the adoption of environment-friendly practices has educated this family of four. Their income has also increased because their produce sells at a better price and his daughters are getting quality education on how to save the environment. Credit goes to Shubh Kal programme. Harbhajan also gave valuable feedback that he wants the radio programme to continue to help the communities in this unique manner.
