TARAgyan
– Doing its BIT for Rural Students
TARAgyan prepares basic computer
courses for rural students and imparts
IT education through TARAkendras
ARAgyan is committed
to the development of the individual and the community
in rural India. The TARAgyan courses are deployed through TARAhaat’s
cyber kiosks known as TARAkendras. TARAgyan has, over the last one year,
introduced many new courses. There has been a constant endeavour to
improve and upgrade courseware based on the feedback from the kendras.
All the courses have been designed by experts keeping industry
requirements in view. A wide range of IT education programes is being
offered for the students. TARAgyan is committed to making education:
Available, Accessible and Affordable. The courses have been closely
reviewed by our in - house team to ensure quality products.
The
Basic Information Technology (BIT)/Microsoft Unlimited Potential
programme covered the basic five modules – Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Computer Fundamentals and Internet. These modules are now available in
fast and slow track, depending on the speed of the learner. This year we
introduced a BIT Plus programme that covered the existing five modules
along with Web Design Fundamentals and Digital Media Fundamentals. Web
Design Fundamentals teaches how to create a simple web page including
how to add links to other pages, create tables and put images on a
webpage. Digital Media teaches the learners digital photography, audio,
and digital video.

The Diploma in
Information Technology (DIT) Programme has been further enhanced with
the addition of the Visual Basic course. Visual Basic teaches how to
develop a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for Databases, for Commercial
or Professional Applications, Game Applications and so on. A student
joining the DIT program, along with doing C and C++, can select any two
modules from FoxPro, Access and Visual Basic. An additional feature of
the DIT program is a one month Project. This Project can be developed on
any of the DIT modules depending on the student’s choice.
For students who
want to learn at a faster pace, we have introduced a new programme
called DIT Plus. This programme has a C&C++ combo, Access, Visual Basic,
SQL, a choice between Tally and Web Design Fundamentals and a Project of
the student’s choice.

In the
pipeline is a new and more advanced, two month hardware course. This
will be available in English, Hindi and Punjabi. The Tally course is
also due for upgradation since newer Tally versions have been
introduced in the market.
Besides course development, we have laid a lot of emphasis on Instructor
skill upgradation. Most BIT Instructors have been given domain training
for Web Design Fundamentals and Digital Media Fundamentals so that they
are eligible to teach the BIT Plus Programme. One of the challenges for
us h as
been to provide BIT training for new franchisees in Jhansi, Patna,
Lucknow and Eastern U.P. This is a four day intensive training session
to help upgrade skills of the Instructors to enable them deliver the BIT
programme effectively.
With the fast
increasing number of franchisees the challenge for TARAgyan is to
develop an online examination system to cater to the kendras in the
remotest areas. Development of online e learning modules is also on the
cards. As the global trends migrate towards technology enabled learning
and e-learning, this division will begin to address the demands of a
larger market place.
