    Poorest Areas Civil Society (PACS)

    Peer learning workshops: The Seventh State Peer Learning Workshops were held across the PACS states

    in the months of August and September 2006.

    Jharkhand : August 20-22 Bihar : August 26-28;  UP : October 19-21;

    Maharashtra: September 7-9; MP& Chhattisgarh : September 12-14

    The agenda for the Peer Learning Workshops had some common elements across all the six states. Intense discussion and planning took place on monitoring implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and National Rural Health Mission, Child Rights and Right to Education, Right to food, Dalit Rights and Mainstreaming Disability. State specific issues were also deliberated upon.

    Training Systems Group (TSG)

    TSG under the UNDP TAHA (Trafficking & HIV/AIDS) project has initiated Participatory Livelihood Assessment study  in 210 villages in 21 districts belonging to the three states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The study also covers Bundelkhand districts of Chattarpur and Sagar  and it offers a good opportunity to study the livelihood options present therein.

     

    Social Action Group (SAG)

     

    n  SAG organized a training cum demonstration on TARAloom technology in Niwari block,  Sept 27-29.

    n  Under SAG, Nav Jag riti Mahila Mandal of Pipra block, Tikamgarh district have started candle making for Diwali.

Environment Systems Branch (ESB)

   

ESB organised the 3rd (in a series of six meetings) multi-stakeholder consultation meeting, Sept 5-6 to get consensus on the proposed voluntary performance standard for Lead Battery manufacturing plants. Representatives of major battery manufacturers, government, NGOs  and dealers had attended the meeting .The first day was dedicated to discussions regarding design of voluntary battery collection system and a take back model for the same was agreed on and the second day was dedicated to discussions on third party verification system and supply chain monitoring for the proposed product certification.

Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA)

VSBK: TARA Ecokiln will open its office at Jamshedpur and Bhubaneshwar in October - this will help  provide better customer services.

TARPaper: TARA handmade paper products were displayed in Aadishilp- tribal fair at Dilli Haat from Aug 28 – Sept 11. Customers  appreciated the products and their design. The fair saw a good sale.

Machine: TARA Looms had been sent to Srilanka. A representative from the island is here for assembling and weaving  at TARA. Most appreciative of the technology of the looms he will now advice neighbouring countries how to make fabric on TARA Looms.

Readers will recall the initiative undertaken by basin-SA Regional Knowledge Platform to develop a draft of the National   Rural Housing and Habitat Policy through countrywide consultations at the state level. During late August and September, consultation workshops were conducted for the states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, M.P, Maharashtra and U.P, West Bengal, Orissa, Goa, Daman & Diu and Uttaranchal.These workshops were conducted in collaboration with the PACS programme. The Ministry of Rural Development has evinced keen interest in the proposal. Inputs from these and the remaining states will be incorporated into the draft to finalise the policy proposal to be submitted to the Government as a ‘Final Draft of the Rural Habitat Policy for India’ next year.

   

TARAhaat

Under the NISG (National Institute for Smart Governance, Hyderabad) project, the enterprise package on poultry has been  developed and pilot testing has been rolled out in Jhansi. The testing is being carried out on the existing poultry entrepreneurs.

n  With more franchised kendras coming under TARAhaat roof, the total number has now reached  132.

n  TARA Akshar the literacy mission, was demonstrated to the Government of Rajasthan for a possible tie-up.
