Nikhil Koithara Awards
Nikhil Koithara Awards are intended to recognise young men and women who have
made outstanding contributions in the fields of Primary Health, Literacy,
Environment, Population and Poverty Reduction through their personal activism
and commitment.
Nikhil Koithara, during the 21 years and 3 months that he lived, his life
shortened by the effects of a near-fatal school bus accident at the age of 12,
had not only accomplished outstanding academic feats, but he had also shown a
deep and activist commitment towards the poor, worldwide. Besides speaking,
writing and fund-raising in support of the causes he believed in, he had saved
and contributed substantially from his scholarship awards while studying
abroad during his last five years. These awards are in the memory of that
young, deeply concerned activist. Shri Ramakrishan Bajaj, who has instituted
the awards, is an eminent Gandhian, Head of the Bajaj Group of Industries and
Chairman, Indian Youth Centres Trust.
All Indian nationals below the age of 30, who have made a major contribution
in the fields of (a) Primary Health, (b) Literacy, (c) Environment, (d)
Population and (d) Poverty Reduction, through their personal activism and
commitment, are eligible for these annual awards. Recommendations may be made
by the Head of any NGO/VO and should contain the details of contributions.
Recommendations should be addressed to the Director, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra to
reach by 15th October each year. The preliminary selection will be made by a
panel constituted by the Director, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra and final selection by
the Trustees of the Indian Youth Centres Trust. If no suitable candidate is
recommended, the award for the field will not be given that year.
Each of the five awards will carry a scroll and a cash prize of Rs. 5000/-
from the award fund donated by Shri Ramakrishna Bajaj and others, and
administered by the Indian Youth Trust. The awards will be given annually in
February at a function held at the Vishwa Yuvak Kendra.
