Nikhil Koithara Awards

Nikhil Koithara Awards are intended to recognise young men and women who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of Primary Health, Literacy, Environment, Population and Poverty Reduction through their personal activism and commitment.

Nikhil Koithara, during the 21 years and 3 months that he lived, his life shortened by the effects of a near-fatal school bus accident at the age of 12, had not only accomplished outstanding academic feats, but he had also shown a deep and activist commitment towards the poor, worldwide.  Besides speaking, writing and fund-raising in support of the causes he believed in, he had saved and contributed substantially from his scholarship awards while studying abroad  during his last five years.  These awards are in the memory of that young, deeply concerned activist.  Shri Ramakrishan Bajaj, who has instituted the awards, is an eminent Gandhian, Head of the Bajaj Group of Industries and Chairman, Indian Youth Centres Trust.

All Indian nationals below the age of 30, who have made a major contribution in the fields of (a) Primary Health, (b) Literacy, (c) Environment, (d) Population and (d) Poverty Reduction, through their personal activism and commitment, are eligible for these annual awards.  Recommendations may be made by the Head of any NGO/VO and should contain the details of contributions.  Recommendations should be addressed to the Director, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra to reach by 15th October each year.  The preliminary selection will be made by a panel constituted by the Director, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra and final selection by the Trustees of the Indian Youth Centres Trust.  If no suitable candidate is recommended, the award for the field will not be given that year.

Each of the five awards will carry a scroll and a cash prize of Rs. 5000/- from the award fund donated by Shri Ramakrishna Bajaj and others, and administered by the Indian Youth Trust.  The awards will be given annually in February at a function held at the Vishwa Yuvak Kendra.
