DA celebrated Earth Day in partnership with the Department of
Environment, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi
(NCTD). The theme of the programme was ‘Partnership for
Sustainable Development’. On this occasion Sheila Dikshit,
Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi released the Earth Charter
teachers’ training modules.

Earth Day was celebrated in association with the Ministry of
Environment and Forests at Dilli Haat, New Delhi. Nearly 500
students from 20 different schools of Delhi participated in
the event. The motive of the event was to spread the message
of Mitigating Climate Change towards Carbon Neutrality. The
students formed a human chain and participated in street
plays. Meena Gupta, Secretary Ministry of Environment and
Forest released a book on climate change and launched a CD
with a Carbon calculator (adapted to Indian conditions).

Dr Vijaya Lakshmi, Assistant Vice President (Environment) DA
attended an international workshop on ‘Oriental Wisdom:
Alternative Pathway Towards Environment and Natural Resource
Management’, on April 10-11, 2008 in Bangkok. As one of the
panelists, she presented the future of sustainability and
challenges to Asia.

DA, with the support from Union Ministry of Environment and
Forests, has designed and developed the first Interactive
State of Environment (SoE) Atlas of India. The Atlas was
released by Shri Namo Narayan Meena, Minister of State in the
Ministry of Environment and Forests, on the occasion of Earth
Day, 2008. |

Closure of PACS Programme: The PACS programme came to its
formal closure by the intended date of March 31, 2008. All
activities were formally completed and the first draft of the
Programme Completion Report has been submitted to Department
for International Development (DFID) and circulated to the
National Advisory Board (NAB) as also the Project Selection
Committee (PSC) members.

DA formally launched a Sustainable Community Development
Programme (SCDP), a programme of ACC Limited. The first
inception report, a quarterly report and a plan for the next
six months on Training and Capacity building along with the
Stakeholder Engagement Plan were submitted on April 30, 2008.
·
DA signed an agreement with Suzlon Foundation for Geo-database
of 84 locations. Pilot activities for women literacy in 15
locations were flagged under TARA Akshar as part of the CSR
initiatives of Suzlon.
·
TARA Livelihood Academy: A training programme was organised
on Development Management for the students of Aravalli
Institute of Management, Jodhpur from March 30 to April 5,
2008 at TARAgram, Orchha. The students interacted with the
rural people and also worked on a project report and its
presentation.
·
Managing Micro-enterprise: Development, Interventions and
Programmes, a fee-based training was organised at TARAgram
Orchha from April 8 to 10, 2008, with international and
internal participation.
·
The fee-based training calendar for the forthcoming year
2008-09 has been uploaded on the DA website. |

The TARAhaat and IRCTC railway reservation system, through its
TARAhaat centres, will be functional from June 2008 onwards.
·
The total number of agricultural query generated under the
Lifeline India project has crossed 42,000.
·
The total number of TARA Akshar graduates is now 44,500.

The communication services branch organised a campaign for
Earth Day on what each individual can do towards mitigating
climate change. The tagline of the campaign ‘be the change you
wish to see in the world….stop the meltdown’ was spread via
T-shirts, caps, banners, brochures and a booklet along with a
CD with tips on how to save the earth.
