Our tryst with DEAN :
The Children Speak Up !

The DEAN programme is literally trying to clean up the world we live in, to make it a better place for future generations through the interaction of children. I have learnt that a big difference can be made by making the children aware and involved. If children take a pledge to clean the environment by doing small duties and if they abide by their pledge sincerely, then their parents and friends will also follow them soon.

Through my involvement with DEAN, I have learnt what actions of mine help or harm the environment. Thus, I will try and reduce those actions which harm the environment.

The most important thing which I learnt from DEAN was that how a handful of people with a dream and a lot of determination could make a difference to the environment. This desire, in turn, has passed on to me and to most of my friends and we look forward to participating in other activities of DEAN.

‘Reach out to save our Environment’ is the main motto of DEAN. The awareness and action activities organized by DEAN have inspired me a

lot and have made me more environment-conscious. As it is said that ‘each drop makes an ocean ‘, I have tried my level best to contribute in environment protection. The water monitoring programme has inspired me to motivate other people and make them aware of how dreadfully we are polluting the environment. The mighty Yamuna, which becomes a drain by the time it leaves Delhi is the best example of how our actions pollute and kill. Even at my home, I have tried hard to make my mother and sister aware that each drop of water is precious and I myself check that all the taps are closed properly and do not leak. The campaign against polybags has really instigated me to fight against polybags. We in our Environment Club, also have made a conscious effort to discourage the use of polybags, starting from ourselves to our parents and to the shopkeepers. The market near our school is a glowing example of our efforts.

Another important thing that I have learnt from DEAN is about saving electricity. Though this campaign has yet to catch everyone’s attention, we have started to play our part by seeing to it that we do not waste electricity i.e. by switching off fans and lights when not necessary.

One aspect I would like DEAN to take up actively is air pollution as Delhi is the fourth most polluted city in the world. We, as students, have started to play our part by filling the brochures regarding ‘pollution check’ and making people open their eyes to this hazard. Thus, the lessons learnt from DEAN are the ones never to be forgotten.

Taking part in water monitoring, anti- polybag campaign, etc. has changed me. Earlier, I used to do things as a matter of fact or as I was told by others. But after being made aware about the impact of human activities on the environment and threat to the future generations, I have stopped taking things for granted. I have become more cautious and concerned about my surroundings and the outside world.
