Web based Village
Information System
R emote
sensing technology and geographic information systems are undeniable
valuable tools for gathering and analyzing spatial information. But for
the most part, these information technologies are not "accessible" to
general users. That is, they are not in themselves able to bring the
information content to a wide range of users. For that we need to
develop application software tools accessible via intranet or internet
browsers. This implies some preprocessing of the information so that it
can be easily presented, displayed, manipulated and downloaded. Recently
Internet has been catching the imagination of the scientific community,
which when merged with GIS has resulted in the next technological
innovation "Internet GIS". This is a cost-effective technology in which
the user does not have to spend on buying GIS software and maintaining
them. Moreover it has become a commonly utilized tool for easy access
and dissemination of spatial and non spatial information.
GIS based spatial planning is
now a widely accepted way to handle complex management and decision
making issues of resource. The need for a suitable information system is
increasingly being felt in all natural resources and developmental
activities, be these for urban or rural areas for sustainable planning.
The emergence of Remote Sensing
and Geographic Information System as a powerful tool for spatial
analysis and storage has made computerization of the spatial data more
convenient. This new technology can reduce the time and cost to the
planners in organizing the data and coming to precise conclusion and
decision. The sustainable development challenge is to optimize often
conflicting needs and demands.
A GIS based village information
system is an application which provides detailed spatial information
pertaining to demography infrastructure and natural resource for a
particular village. Using techniques of remote sensing and geographic
information system a spatial database cab be compiled, this database is
then analyzed in a web GIS platform to create thematic maps, once the
maps are ready they are published over Internet on a user friendly
interface. User can browse through the interactive maps and get detailed
information on spatial data, user can also create queries to get some
specific data, print maps and so on. This information system can support
the planners in information retrieval by integrating the spatial and
nonspatial data; it requires sophisticated data management systems to
handle huge spatially correlated data.
Village Information System
means the management of village related information in a technological
environment, which will help the rural planners for the planning and
implementation of plans in rural areas. It basically reduces the time
and cost involved with the creation of data base for the planning. It
comprises all the information related to the facilities, infrastructure,
population, building type, etc. These informations are needed to analyze
the existing scenario at the development stage in the village. The
emergence of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System as a
powerful tool for spatial analysis and storage has in effect alleviated
the problem by computerization of the spatial data. Thus, the main
objective of the study is to develop a village information system
providing complete information for decision-making based on their
existing resources and capabilities. Information system has been
developed in order to generate maps, which would provide relevant
information for developmental activities and also act as source
information authentication about the village.
The Village Information System
will have a large pool of potential users for both the monitoring and
reporting functions of the system. This includes the general public;
certain specific community interest groups; schools and other
educational institutes; industry groups; Government decision-makers;
natural resource planners and managers.
