The 2nd Sustainability Summit: Asia 2007 held on December 11-12,
2007 on Partnerships in Action was inaugurated by Shri Pranab
Mukherjee, Hon'ble Minister for External Affairs. Over 350
participants from industries, governments and civil societies from
several countries discussed key issues pertaining to Food Security:
Linking Farmers to Market; Responsible Mining: Sharing Value;
Sustainability in Construction: Foundation for Growth; and
Sustainable Financing: Fostering Inclusive Growth. |

Training programmes were organised on several key issues such
as - 'Developing a Right - based Gender Sensitive Approach to
Trafficking' on December 4-6, 2007, 'Mainstreaming Gender in
Development Programme' on December
10-12, 2007, 'Art of Project Cycle Management using RBM Tools'
for British Red Cross Society at Maldives on December 15-18,
2007, at TARAgram, Orchha (MP).

A training programme for the Para-Medical Staff was organised
at TARAgram on December 19, 2007 in association with Sri
Ramachandra University, Chennai. About 27 para-medical staff
working with Government Hospitals from Tikamgarh and Jhansi
districts participated in the training programme.

Drip irrigation and sprinklers demonstrated at Gaushala in
Orchha for its multiplication in the neighbouring villages.

Development Alternatives put up
a stall to spread the message of the Earth Charter principles
of ‘Just, Sustainable and Peaceful Global Society’ at the
Department of Environment and Forests, Government of Delhi Eco
Club Meet held at the National Bal Bhavan on December 20-21,
2007.

Development Alternatives (DA),
in partnership with Occupational Knowledge International (OK
International) and National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning
in India (NRCLPI), are going to launch Better Environmental
Sustainability Targets (BEST) for eco labelling and
certification of lead batteries in the 9th Auto Expo on
January 10-17, 2008.

DA representatives went to Bangladesh for a feasibility study
on cleaner brick production technology on December 8-19, 2007,
on a project funded by the World Bank. From February onwards,
some pilot projects will be initiated in Bangladesh by DA in
partnership with NGOs based in Bangladesh.

DA representatives participated
in the 13th Meeting of the Conference of Parties in Bali,
Indonesia on December 3-14, 2007, and coordinated the
activities of the network on policy advocacy and influencing
the negotiations towards a desirable outcome. |

Rural Advancement (TARA) |

EcoKiln: TARA BrickMek supplied to Roshni, a Women Self Help
Group in Mahasumund, Chattisgarh from the ICEF Revolving Fund to
facilitate them in earning their livelihoods in Technology
Upgradation/Mechanisation of TARA Ecokiln (VSBK) in the brick
industry.

Machines: TARA launched the new Mechanized Balram and sent it
MAI Industry, Chanderpur (Maharashtra). The users are fully
satisfied with the operation, performance and production
capacity of the machine, and are planning to buy more of the
same for greater productivity and more sustainable livelihoods.
·
Paper: TARA handmade paper products were put up for sale in the
British Embassy Christmas Fair and the customers liked and
appreciated the quality and design of the products. Acid free
paper is a speciality of TARA and private conservators demand a
lot of the same. The Jharkhand Khadi Village Board has placed
orders for papers and products to be sold in all Jharkhand KVIB
showrooms. |

At the National Conference on 'What it Takes to Eradicate Poverty'
organised on the behalf of PACS (Poorest Areas Civil Society ) Programme
held at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on December 4-6, 2007, a
(symbolic) postcard was handed over to the Union Minister of Rural
Development GOI, Dr
Raghuvansh Prasad Singh. A postcard campaign was
initiated at the behest of basin–SA, the knowledge platform to convey
the concern of the India rural population regarding their habitat and
housing. PACS Programme has also financially supported the formulation
of the proposal of the draft for the Rural housing and Habitat policy.
The draft copy was officially handed over to the Secretary, Rural
Development, Dr Subas
Pani.

A
Biogas-based generator and flour mill was inaugurated at
Mauranipur
Gaushala in
Bundelkhand on December 20, 2007 by
Vidyutkant
Shukla,
Vice-President, Gau
Samvardhan Board,
Lucknow. The chief guest was
Hari
Om
Pathak from
Sidheswar temple,
Jhansi. The electricity produced by
this genset is being utilised to run a 5-HP motor-based flour mill and
fodder cutter and the rest is used for the
gaushala.

The project ‘Methane to Market’ (Gaushala) funded by USAID is now
15-months old. A training programme on ‘Agriculture and the Benefits of
Vermin Compost’ was organized at Lalitpur Gaushala. A hundred farmers
have benefited from this endeavour. |
