  • A workshop on ‘Climate Change: Sharing Experiences, Scientific Aspects and Way Ahead’, a Bundelkhand Knowledge Platform initiative was conducted on March 26, 2012 at the National Research Centre for Agroforestry. In this programme organised by Development Alternatives (DA) and National Research Centre for Agroforestry (NRCAF) with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), representatives of different included CSOs, representatives of Krishi Vigyan Kendras, line departments, district agriculture departments, farming communities, NABARD and academic institutes, in addition to the representatives of the organizing agencies, i.e., DA and NRCAF.

  • Crop Day celebrations were jointly organised by Bundelkhand Harit Kisan Mandal and DA in Kotbehta village in Badagaon block of Jhansi on March 31, 2012. Information on innovative and resource efficient technologies and also government schemes was shared with the participants. The participants were encouraged to form Farmer’s Clubs in for effective information sharing.  The event was graced by Dr. Surendra Babu of NABARD and other government representatives. Farmers from seven villages participated at the event.

  • A tract of wasteland (2 acres approx.) in the backyard of Gaushala has been converted into agricultural land and energy plantation was undertaken in the field. This will provide the community with both fodder for the cattle and biomass for sale.

TARA Livelihood Academy

  • The Development Alternatives Group has been selected as one of the Top 10 Performing Training Centres that completed the annual global online survey of the HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) Programme in December 2011 and received a cash grant of USD 10,000.

  • TLA has conducted a 45 days’ training on Cutting and Tailoring for 70 women SHG members from January 19 to March 3, 2012 at Shahnagar under DPIP, Panna.

  • Another 45 days’ training was conducted on Basic Stitching and Bag Making for 35 women SHG members from February 7 to March 31, 2012 at Village Radhapur under DPIP, Tikamgarh.

  • Integrated Watershed Development Project of the Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Mission, Bhopal conducted a 15-day training session for Watershed Committee Presidents Secretaries at Orchha on March 12-26.

  • A training session was conducted for 3 days on SHG Formation and Internal loaning for 40 SHG members on March 29-31, 2012 for District Forest Officer, Jhansi under the Japan International Cooperation Agency project.

 
 

Innovation Systems Branch (ISB)

 
 
  • A team comprising of persons from the United Nations Development Programme and the Planning Commission visited the National Resource Cell for District Planning (NRCDP) at DA on March 23, 2012 to review the progress being made by the Cell.

  • A final scientific workshop of the Indo-UK Climate Change Adaptation Research Programme was organised on March 28, 2012 in New Delhi. Development Alternatives, one of the project partners, has conducted a study on Vulnerability and Adaptation Planning for Madhya Pradesh. An overview of the project, findings of the project partners and the communication and dissemination strategies was presented at the workshop.

  • A ten days’ training session on artificial jewellery was imparted from March 20 to 30, 2012 to the communities in the village of Gopiyakhar under the project ‘Integrating Livelihoods Approach in Conservation Strategy’ in the National Chambal Sanctuary. The objective of the project was to demonstrate livelihoods in the sanctuary that can reduce pressure on natural resources.

 
 

Communication Solutions Branch (CSB)

 
 
  • A community mobilisers’ training was conducted on March 14, 2012 to train the community mobilisers from the slums of south Delhi on Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage. The emphasis of the training was to make trainees aware of household methods like chlorination, boiling and SODIS as effective ways of household water management.

  • A consultation took place on March 16, 2012 focusing on the ‘Inputs on Strategies for Scaling up the Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) method’ and ‘Policy Inputs on HWTS’. The participants of the consultation process included Government officers, officials from embassies and NGOs working on water issues.

  • Under the DM RRS project, training of the preliminary round winners of the Rural Reality Show of all the zones on climate change adaptation options in semi-arid regions was conducted with an exposure visit to Gaushala from February 27 to March 1 and March 20, 2012. The five training sessions focused on five different themes - ‘Amrit Mitti’, Kitchen Garden, Vermi-Composting, Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting Structures and Agroforestry. Approximately, 120 people participated in these trainings.

  • TARA Akshar+ programme successfully completed its project with the State Resource Centre of Bhopal under the National Literacy Mission on March 25, 2012. The programme made 400 women literate across 10 centres in Tikamgarh and Shivpur districts of Madhya Pradesh. An evaluation of all these learners was conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling.
