TARAAkshar+ women felicitated by Honourable Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Manish Sisodiya, Delhi

Sixteen women of the TARAAkshar+ programme were felicitated by Honourable Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Manish Sisodiya at the CII Delhi State Annual Session and Business Conference on Building Delhi's Competitiveness. Two participants shared their journey from being neo-literate to literate and how the programme has enhanced their self-esteem. The certificate has boosted their morale and they will be working towards enhancing their knowledge and skills.

 

 

Consultation on 'Economic Transitions towards Sustainable Development for India: MSMEs', Maharashtra

On 17th March, consultation with MSMEs in and around Pune as well as experts from the sectors was conducted by Development Alternatives, under the Green Economy project in partnership with TARA (i-GPreneur). The consultation consisted of 4 sessions with speaker and participant discussions and presentations. The objectives of the consultation were to understand the challenges and opportunities for MSMEs to make their business practices more sustainable such that they have better environmental and social outcomes, along with identifying the supporting roles that other stakeholders like governments and big businesses could adopt in order to aid a transition towards a greener and fairer economy.

 

International workshop on 'Resource and Climate Protection through integrated waste management projects in India', Uttarakhand

The workshop was conducted on 23rd March as a part of the project on “Resource and Climate Protection through integrated waste management projects in India” that has been commissioned by the UBA and ifeu. Development Alternatives is implementing the project in three cities in India: Bengaluru, Haridwar and Bhopal. The workshop aimed to bring the different stakeholders of Haridwar to a common platform and to discuss the research findings as well as share the possible optimisation scenarios for waste management that has been developed by the research team. The workshop saw representation from the Nagar Nigam (Municipality), NGOs, research and academic institutions and private consultancies from the waste management sector.

 

Regional consultation workshop on a CSO Vision for Cooperative Transboundary Water Resource Management in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna River Basins, Nepal

The BRIDGE GBM or ‘Building River Dialogue and Governance (BRIDGE) for the Civil Society Organizations (CSO) in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) River Basins’ is a project funded by The Asia Foundation and facilitated by IUCN. The three day workshop (21 - 23rd March, 2017) was organised with the primary objective of gathering inputs for the further development of the GBM CSO vision for inclusive water governance. DA was among the few selected CSOs from India invited to participate in this visioning exercise.

Training on Generate Your Business Idea, Delhi

A 7- days training was conducted on ‘Generate Your Business Idea’ (GYB) in Ghitorni from 3rd March 2017 to 10th March, 2017. In all, 22 women took part in the training. The objective of training was to enable potential entrepreneurs to analyse their aptitude towards taking up entrepreneurship and the training also provides a platform to develop a feasible business idea. By the end of the training course, the potential entrepreneurs were able to develop a concrete and feasible business plan. About ten participants have already started their enterprises, namely, tiffin service, tailoring, embroidery, data center and others.

 

International Women’s Day celebration under the ‘Gift her Education’ initiative, Delhi

Celebration of International Women’s Day with TARAAkshar+ women, was spread over two days, 8th and 9th March, 2017. More than 100 women participated in many fun-filled and interesting activities. It was a very heartening experience for the women to rejoice in the identity that they have created for themselves after joining the TARAAkshar+ programme. The event included activities like quizzes, drawing competition and games and the winners were felicitated at the end of the event.

 

Training of Farmer Producer Organisation, Datia at Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute (IGFRI), Uttar Pradesh

Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO), Datia attended a 3-days training programme from 16th March, 2017 to 18th March, 2017 at IGFRI, Jhansi. The sessions focused on critical aspects of participatory seed production, enhanced quality and fertility of seeds. The participants gained information on production of high quality seeds.

 

 

Training of Wadi farmers on Water Management, Madhya Pradesh

About 23 Wadi farmers of Bhamargarh village were provided training on how to save the run-off water during the monsoon season. It was an interactive session wherein the farmers gained knowledge on water recharge, farm bunding and soil moisture conservation. The participants learnt the khanti model which is based on saving water in a land slope pattern.

 

 

Awareness workshop on Water Conservation and Hygiene, Uttar Pradesh

Awareness workshop on Water Conservation and Hygiene was organised on 22nd March, 2017 in Ambabai village of Jhansi. Awareness among members of Self Help Groups took place. Topic related to water conservation, safe water, healthy habits were covered during the workshop. Sarpanch and members of the Panchayat were also present. An assessment walk was conducted across the area and repair and maintenance work of water sources was done with the help of Panchayat as a part of water conservation and cleanliness drive.

 

WASH training campaign with students and community, Uttarakhand

Training on Water, Sanitation, Hygiene & Health (WASH) was organised with students of Bhagwanpur on 11th February 2017. The objective of the training was to instill a sense of hygiene and cleanliness in children and the community. In all 120 students were trained and three WASH Ambassadors were selected. A similar campaign was organised with the residents of Mandawar village, Bhagwanpur, Roorkee, wherein more than 70 community members, comprising school students, women and men took part. The objective of the training was to introduce them to concept of water testing through AquaCheck vials and other methodologies including litmus paper et al. Short movies on spread of waterborne diseases, hand washing techniques, etc. were also screened as a part of awareness.

 

World Water Day Mela at Baghpura village, Rajasthan

Development Alternatives along with Unicef, Rajasthan aims to increase climate and disaster resilience of children, adolescents and women through strengthened people’s participation in local development. In this context, on the occasion of World Water Day, DA took an opportunity to spread a word for conserving water, importance of hygiene, environment thus learning to deal with climate change. A booth was set up, wherein engaging activities like puppetry, story recitation, water testing and Unicef’s flip climate change were held. The activities aimed to create awareness on climate change and importance of water in life. More than 300 people attended the event and around 50 participants signed the cleanliness pledge where they promised to conserve water and take steps to preserve the environment.

Sustaining farm productivity through watershed based participatory balance nutrient management, Indian Journal of Soil Conservation, August 2016. The paper is based on action research conducted at Domagor-Pahuj watershed located in Babina block of Jhansi where DA, with scientific support from NRCAF, is developing a model watershed under the aegis of ICRISAT.
