Towards a Circular Economy for Plastic in India - A review of community, industry and public sector initiatives

India's plastic consumption per capita remains low. Its production of plastic waste in absolute terms makes it the 15th largest producer of plastic waste in the world. A substantial proportion of this waste is mismanaged with negative consequences on the natural environment and human health. In this context, this report aims at building an understanding of initiatives that have been implemented in India to address plastic waste and support a circular economy for plastics.

Understanding Water Flows in Dehradun

Cities are the epicenters of growth; however the rising urbanization phenomenon has directly given rise to unchecked resources exploitation. Issues like water scarcity and contamination occur due to over-exploitation and mismanagement of the city’s water resources. This report is the glimpse of the baseline scenario prevailing in the city of Dehradun.

PERSPECTIVES

Water Security: A Growing Concern

The importance of water, a life-growing resource, cannot be over emphasised. India has a low water management score. This is not only making a deep impact on the country’s economic advancement but is also leading to acute shortages of water for agriculture and potable water.
The future looks bleak as demand for water greatly outstrips the supply. It is estimated that demand will outstrip supply by 50 per cent by the year 2030. This would affect agriculture as well as water-intensive businesses such as food processing, drinks, textiles, metals, chemicals, and paper.

Protecting our Lifeline River Ganga

The Ganga touches and impacts millions of lives through its journey. But the ever-growing tonnage of plastic waste being dumped into the river has made it one of the top 10 rivers in the world carrying plastic to the ocean.
This video highlights the initiatives taken up by Development Alternatives in the cities of Haridwar and Prayagraj in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, respectively, to bring about a change by directly engaging with a variety of stakeholders including government officials, faith-based institutions, civil society organisations, volunteer groups and academicians.
