trialogue 2047 on Economic transitions towards Sustainable Development for India took place on 8th April 2017 in Bengaluru. The key speakers included Mr A R Shivakumar, Principal Investigator - RWH and Senior Fellow at Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Ms Chitra Vishwanath, Managing Director, BIOME Environmental Solutions Private Limited and Dr Jyotsna Jha, Director, Centre for Policy and Budget Studies. The trialogue 2047 focussed on issues of construction, water and education and attempted to derive understanding of the challenges with respect to resources, technology, consumer behaviours, policy and market instruments that are preventing large scale uptake of green production practices and possible market solutions that can drive a transition towards sustainable production and lifestyles. The event concluded with recommendations and insights on the economic transitions that are required to have sustainable development in India.

 

National Workshop on Green Win-Win Solutions at Development Alternatives in Delhi

The 2nd National Workshop on Green Win-Win Solutions took place on 19th April, 2017 under the GREEN-WIN project. The National Workshop Programme is a result of the collaboration between Society for Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA), which is a not for profit of the Development Alternatives Group and the EU project GREEN-WIN via the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The workshop was oriented to support collaboration, gain an improved understanding and support learning networks on win-win solutions and new forms of entrepreneurship linking climate change, while exploring the most conducive and enabling institutional conditions to support sustainable development and green economy. The discussion in this workshop contributed to overcoming economic, financial and institutional barriers to sustainable climate action at local and international levels through identifying win-win strategies, green business models and enabling environments which support meeting Sustainable Development Goals via green entrepreneurship.

 

International Workshop on ‘Fostering Resource Efficiency by Securing Sustainable Resource Utilization and Reuse of Secondary Raw Materials’ in Delhi

On 20th April, 2017 GIZ along with support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change organised the 2nd International Workshop on 'Fostering Resource efficiency by securing sustainable resource utilisation and reuse of secondary raw materials' in Delhi. At this event research funded by GIZ along with DA, TERI, Adelphi and IFEU as partners was presented in the area of resource efficiency in the construction and automobile sector. The project also led to the establishment of the Indian Resource Panel. At this event the relevance and significance of the panel was defined and its national importance in providing policy support as part of the sustainable development agenda. The Policy brief on recommendations for policy makers on resource efficiency was launched at this event. Dr. Ashok Khosla was the key note speaker for the session on Resource Efficiency challenges and opportunities in the Indian and G20 context.

Health Camp organised in Uttarakhand

Two health camps were organised in Bhagwanpur, with the help of ASHA workers, ANMs, local hospital / clinic on 2nd and 23rd April, 2017. The health camps covered the beneficiaries of Mandawar village and reached about 250 community members of the area. The objective of the camp was to raise awareness on basic medical issues, hygienic and unhygienic behaviors, and preventative health care. The beneficiaries responded positively to the discussions and expressed their appreciation that an effort was being made to bring attention to such issues. The Health Camp Team included a gynecologist, a general and a pharmacist. The medical camps were facilitated by TARA and DISHA (NGO partner) team under the Hariyali, Udyamita aur Sampannata programme funded by Godrej Interio (Division of Godrej and Boyce).

 

TARAAkshar+ programme going on in full fervor in Delhi and Rajasthan

TARAAkshar+ activities under CII’s Gift Her Education project is on a concluding phase with TARA Akshar and TARA Ganit examinations being conducted. Gyan Chaupali (post-literacy program) training for TARA Saheli, Supervisors and CSO partner has been conducted and Gyan Chaupali has successfully started in the 4 intervention areas of Delhi. In Bundelkhand programme area, currently, five TARA Akshar+ centers are running at Pipra, Bagan, Punawali Kala, Sarmau and Rampura which is at present educating more than 150 women.

 

 

Training and capacity building workshop on C&D waste management in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal

The government of India has recently notified Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016, thereby separating C&D waste from municipal solid waste. There have been various responsibilities allotted to municipalities under the new rules. Development Alternatives along with GIZ conducted various workshops in cities with municipalities on C&D waste management. The workshops attempted to create awareness on the new rules and provide firsthand information on various elements of C&D waste management such as tendering, good practices and technology options. The training was conducted in co-operation with Mahatma Gandhi Swachata Mission in Gujarat, Directorate of Urban Administration & Development in Madhya Pradesh and Administrative Training Institute in West Bengal. More than 50 municipal corporations and 175 government representatives have been trained on management of the topic. The workshop was of immense help to the participants as very few municipalities had the knowledge and understanding on management and reuse of C&D waste.

 

WASH training for students of Government School in Uttarakhand

On 24th April, a half day WASH workshop was conducted for the students of Government Primary School Chauli under the Hariyali, Udyamita and Sampannata project. A total of 50 students from the primary wing were part of the workshop. The session covered topics like safe water, water testing through Aquacheck vials and how to make water safe to drink. A special emphasis was made on correct hand washing techniques to imbibe healthy habits in children.

 

 

Training and Sensitisation Workshop on Gender, Patriarchy and Health in Uttarakhand

A half day training and sensitisation workshop was organised on 25th April, 2017 in Mandawar village in Bhagwanpur, near Roorkee under the project called Hariyali Udyamita aur Sampannata. More than 20 community women participated in the training and sensitisation workshop. Key topics included gender roles and relations, patriarchy, health and sexuality. The objective of the workshop was to sensitise women about gender, patriarchy and reproductive health. This workshop will help the women to build their capacities as women leaders who would guide other women in gender and health related issues in Bhagwanpur area.

 

Launch of a Tailoring Institute in Delhi

As a part of the UNDP project aiming to set up micorenterprises for 60 women, a tailoring unit was inaugurated on 14th April 2017. The objective of the launch was to motivate the entrepreneur and market the enterprise by extensive promotion. The enterprise is run by Mrs. Vimla Thakur who had undertaken enterprise development training by TARA. She has been supported by Development Alternatives Group to procure machinery, develop promotional collaterals, process manuals and registration of the institute. Once, she started getting enrollments, the enterprise launch was planned so that her institute can be known among mass. The project envisages community sensitisation, bridging information gap, training and enterprise setup and also assists the new entrepreneurs procure machinery, develop promotional collaterals, develop process manuals and registration of the centres.

 

Training on 'Start and Generate Your Business Idea' in Delhi

A six day training was organised from 20th April, 2017 to 25th April, 2017 in Delhi State Council for Women (New Friends Colony) under the UNDP - COE project. The objective of the training was to enable potential entrepreneurs to assess their aptitude towards starting a business and developing a feasible business idea. The business idea will be the starting point for developing a business plan. By the end of the training course, the trainees were able to develop a concrete and feasible business plan. Out of 18, a total of 3 will be starting their enterprises in the near future.

In GREEN-WIN we thereby focus on the potential of green business models and switching economies to green growth pathways. This Dossier highlights the possible win-win strategies, green business models and enabling environment which can contribute to green economy in the context of SDGs, Renewable Energy, Climate Change and Resilient Livelihoods.
