George C. Varughese
Mr George C Varughese is the president of the Development Alternatives and has undertaken the task of building a trans-disciplinary group, capable of addressing issues related to environment and sustainable development. He has coordinated or actively participated in nearly all the assignments undertaken by the group.
Environment and Development – Mr Varughese has nearly two decades of experience in various facets of environment and development, including activities related to national and international policy formulation, technical support to programmes and projects, conducting training programmes, building partnerships and managing large-scale field programmes, involving community participation.
His areas of expertise include Programme Planning and Management, Institutional Design, Regional Environmental Planning, Environment Impact Assessment; Natural Resource Management, Information Systems Management, Policy Formulation and Construction Management.
He has also taken up the additional responsibilities either in an individual capacity or representing the organisation, the NGO community, India or South Asia. He is a member of Commission on Environment Strategy and Planning, IUCN; International Association for Impact Assessment; Study Group on Technology and Development Strategies for Rural Labour; National Commission for Rural Labour, Govt. of India; National Expert Committee on Health and Drinking Water, Department of Science and Technology; Working Group on Electronics for Social and Rural Development, Department of Electronics, Government of India; Environmental Appraisal Committee, Ministry of Steel and Mines and Ministry of
Environment, Government of India; Board of Studies, Department of Physical Planning, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi; Steering Committee, Global Water Partnership Advisory Committee, UNEP, InfoTerra and Executive Committee Asia Pacific Council for Sustainable Development.
Mr Varughese has a Masters degree in Urban & Regional Planning and bachelors in civil engineering.
