C & D Waste Management
With the boom in construction activities resulting in tremendous resource crunch in the construction sector the focus towards utilisation of secondary construction materials is inevitable to sustain the Indian construction Industry. Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste is one of the secondary resources DA has been working on for the last few years as an alternate to the depleting virgin resources. In a very short span DA has become a pioneer in delivering C&D waste management solutions, taking into account the resource shortage in construction sector with a focus on resource efficiency, utilisation of secondary raw materials and circular economy concepts.
“Fostering Resource Efficiency by Securing Sustainable Resource Utilization and Reuse of Secondary Raw Materials” is a project that DA is partnering with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) by German Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) supported by Indian Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
DA being a knowledge partner focusing on ‘fostering resource efficiency in Indian construction sector’, has conducted a nationwide survey and analyzed the existing C&D waste management practices in India. GIZ has published the research findings and the best practices in form of reports including the “Market Evaluation of the Use of Secondary Raw Materials from Construction and Demolition Waste” and “Material Consumption Patterns in India: A Baseline Study of the Automotive and Construction Sectors”.
Further using the project as a platform DA has developed its internal capacity in C&D waste management sector and with its rich building material research experience, it has been providing technical support to industrial partners for increased efficiency of C&D waste management, processing, quality certification, marketing and building material product development utilizing C&D waste.
DA along with its project partners has conducted a series of capacity development workshops across India, which has led to the capacity development of more than 40 ULBs in India for C&D waste management. DAs knowledge products like “Market Study on Construction and Demolition Waste Utilisation in Ahmedabad” and “Market Analysis of Utilisation of Secondary Raw Materials for Manufacture of Building Materials in Bangalore City” is widely used as reference documents by different stakeholders to get engaged in C&D waste management and utilisation as a resource. DAs efforts have also resulted to bring about a perception change within stakeholders for C&D waste from being a burden to a secondary building material resource.
